Looker Studio Tip: How to Color bar chart by dimension value

Hi folks! I am sure you had the same problem as me when you tried to color a bar chart. Basically, I was trying to create a chart in Looker Studio that would visualize the military spending of a list of nations.

However, when I tried to use multiple colors for my “Top 10 Countries” dimension, I found there are some limitations regarding bar charts. Actually, color by dimension value is possible only if your bar chart shows more than one dimension.

Don’t worry! 🙂 Today, I’m going to show you a fantastic and quick solution so that you don’t have to worry about this anymore.

First of all, start by selecting your dimension inside the bar chart set-up.

Now, add the same dimension again, but this time as a breakdown dimension.

Go to the Style tab and click on “Stacked bars”.

Select the “Manage dimension value colors” panel and pick your wished colors.

I hope Google will update the settings in order to color by dimension value even if the bar chart displays just one dimension. But for now I hope you find this solution useful! 🙂
